AMEND THE GENERAL RULES CONCERNING UNIVERSITY ORGANIZATION AND PROCEDURE

Action:

Amend Article V, Section 4 of The General Rules Concerning University Organization and Procedure No Funding Required

Funding:

The General Rules Concerning University Organization and Procedure are enacted by the Board of Trustees and supplement the University Statutes. The General Rules address administrative organization; powers, duties, and responsibilities of University Officers; and various other administrative matters. (Statutes, Preamble). Article V of the General Rules concerns "University Property." Section 4 addresses the "Naming of Buildings, Streets and Drives" and is attached hereto. The current language in Section 4 was adopted many years ago and has not been revised since that time. During the past year, numerous situations have arisen that have highlighted the inadequacies of the current provisions. For example, the current provisions simply assume that donors involved in naming situations will be individuals; Sec. 4(a) provides that “Buildings … may be named for … donors whose individual contributions have been crucial in the financing of such buildings.” This does not allow for corporate-naming opportunities to be considered.
