T H E load is applied to the gravel bed through a railroad tie by means of a screw jack. At various points in the gravel bed small metal boxes are buried, and these are connected with the dials shown projecting from the gravel bed at various points. The pressures in the gravel bed are transmitted to these boxes, and are indicated by the dials.

T H E amount of water flowing through a pipe may be determined if it is allowed to discharge into the air in a vertical direction through a plate with a circular hole in it. The height to which the jet rises is a measure of the quantity of water passing. MATERIALS TESTING AND HYDRAULICS WORK
