Cleaves Bennett, M. L., Assistant Librarian, was born at Mattoon, 111.; graduated from the Mattoon High School in '85, and from the University of Illinois in '89.

William Low Pillsbury, A. M., Registrar, was born in 1838, at Derry, N. H. He prepared for college at Phillips' Academy, Andover, Mass.; entered Harvard College in '59, graduating in '63. In August, '63, he became Principal of the Model School Department of the State Normal University, at Normal, Illinois. In 7 1 he left Normal and was in business in Bloomington till 76, and in Springfield till 79, when he was appointed chief clerk in the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction of Illinois. In April, '88, he was made Secretary of the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of

tillebur?.

Illinois, and the following June, Secretary of the Board of Trustees. In August, '93, in addition to his other work, he was appointed Registrar of the University. Mr. Pillsbury has written " A Sketch of the Permanent School Funds of Illinois," published in the Report of the Superintendent Public Instruction, '81-'82; " T h e Early History of Education in Illinois," '85-'86; "Historical Sketches of the State Normal Universities, and the University of Illinois," '87-'88; "Bateman's Common School Decisions" was revised and published by him in '87, and a second revision made in-'90. Is a member of. the American Historical Association.
