the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois that it now holds in its hands ready for payment the sum of One Thousand Dollars ($1000) so bequeathed, that Lloyd Morey, the Comptroller of the University, is hereby appointed to receive the aforesaid sum of One Thousand Dollars (jSiooo) from the American Security and Trust Company and to receipt for the same. O n motion of M r . Trees, this resolution w a s adopted.

RECOMMENDATION FOR A NEW WELL

(3) A recommendation that the Superintendent of Business Operations be authorized to proceed with the arrangements for a new well and that the proper officers be authorized to enter into a contract under the rules of the Board for such a purpose. I further recommend that an appropriation of j$i8,ooo be made for this purpose to be charged against the budget of the Supervising Architect for Physical Plant Extension in the budget of the year beginning July 1, 1923. T h e s e r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s w e r e approved.

EXPENSES OF TRIP OF PROFESSOR EDMONDS FOR THE PURCHASE OF STALLION

(4) At the meeting of the Board last October an appropriation of #5000 was made for the purchase of a stallion for the College of Agriculture. This sum was intended to include the necessary expenses of someone to purchase the animal and bring i t here. It is the opinion of Dean Mumford, Professor Edmonds, and others concerned, that w e shall have to get the animal in France and that someone should go over and make the purchase there. I therefore recall the matter to your attention and ask that I be authorized to approve a bill for the travelling expenses of Professor Edmonds for this purpose, the same to come out of the original appropriation. O n motion of M r . A r m s t r o n g , this expenditure w a s authorized.

CONTRACT WITH U. S. VETERANS' BUREAU

(5) A recommendation that a contract be made with the U. S. Veterans' Bureau for the year beginning July 1, 1923, on the same terms as those in the contract approved February 13, 1923 (page 123). O n motion of M r s . Blake, this r e c o m m e n d a t i o n w a s concurred in.

REPORT ON THE DEATH OF GLENN M. CROSBY

(6) I regret to inform the Board that Mr. Glenn M . Crosby, Assistant Superintendent of the Foundry Laboratory, whose salary was $1800, was injured in the foundry on the afternoon of February 23. H e was hit by some part of a crane tackle while he and others were shaking out a casting from a mold form. This work was being done as a part of the regular classwork, and was not unusually hazardous. M a y 12, 1923 President David Kinley, University of Illinois Dear Sir: Following your request, the Committee on Accident Compensation assembled on M a y 1 to hear testimony concerning the accident resulting in the death of Glenn M . Crosby. The witnesses heard by the Committee were all sworn to testify, and I a m enclosing to you their testimony, as transcribed by the stenographer at the hearing. You will see from the testimony that Mr. Crosby met with his accident while in the line of duty at the Foundry Laboratory. The injury was not attributable to any neglect on his part, or that of any University employee assisting in the work. It was purely an accident. After receiving the transcription of the testimony the Committee considered the matter fully yesterday, and reached the conclusion that the University should
