give to each a fair and open opportunity to bid, and due and fair consideration of the proposals submitted. The committee, on July 17, received the following sealed proposals, which were opened and considered in a meeting of the committee the same day at the University:

After consideration of the proposals it was voted by the committee to award the contract to the Riverton Coal Co., Chicago, on their giving bond and entering into contract. Respectfully submitted,

The committee entered into a contract with the Riverton Coal Co. after the company had filed a bond for $2,000 for the faithful performance of their part of the contract. Both a copy of the contract and the bond have been filed in the office of the secretary of this board. We submit a copy of the contract herewith and desire to have it printed as a part of this report.

CONTRACT MADE FOR COAL IN DUPLICATE.

It is hereby agreed by and between the Riverton Coal Co., of Chicago, 111., and the University of Illinois, located at Urbana, 111., that: (1) The said Riverton Coal Company shall furnish to the University six thousand (6,000) tons, more or less, as the said University of Illinois may elect, of best quality of pea coal from the mines of Riverton, Illinois, the said pea coal to be of such sized pieces as to pass over a 3-8 inch screen and through a m, inch screen in the ordinary process of separating lump from screened coals at the mines. (2) The coal shall be delivered on the Wabash railroad tracks at Champaign, 111., between the dates of this instrument and Aug. 31, 1901, in such amounts and at such times as may be required for use by the said University of Illinois as per instructions from said University. (3) It is understood and agreed that if the said Riverton Coal Co. fails to furnish coal of quality and quantity stated as needed for use in the heating, lighting, and power plant of the said University of Illinois, then the said Riverton Coal Co. shall pay the difference between the cost of the fuel, which the University of Illinois may buy and the contract price stated herein as and for liquidated damages. In order to make less probable a dearth of coal at the University, both parties hereto shall endeavor to keep constantly m the'coalbinsof the University heating plant and in bunkers near the railroad tracks at least two weeks' supply of coal for the heating plant of the said University. (4) It is understood and agreed that the shipments under this contract shall be subject to strikes, blockades, shortage of cars, and other causes beyond the control of the said Riverton Coal Company; but the said Riverton Coal Company shall make every possible endeavor to avoid loss to the University by any of the above causes.
