COAL CONTRACT.

T h e C o m m i t t e e on B u i l d i n g s and G r o u n d s m a d e t h e following r e p o r t of i t s action with regard t o c o n t r a c t i n g for coal for t h e e n s u ing year:

CHICAGO, Sept. 21, 1900.

Io the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. Your Committee on Buildings and Grounds to which was referred the purchase of coal for the year ending Aug. 31, 1901, begs leave to report as follows: Your Committee decided to call for approximately 6,000 tons of pea coal to be delivered during the year, and early in July caused the following call for bids to be published for ten days in the two daily papers of Champaign and the one of Urbana. In addition thereto your Committee sent type-written copies of the same call to 34 firms and companies which supply our mine coal in this State—all at the time known to your Committee.

PROPOSALS FOR COAL.

The Committee on Buildings and Grounds of the University of Illinois will receive, till 10:00 o'clock a. m M July 17, 1900, sealed proposals for 6,000 tons, more or less, of best Illinois coal to be delivered f. o. b. cars at Urbana, or Champaign, 111., for the University of Illinois. The coal will be of size known as pea coal and will pass through a Pu inch screen and over a 38 screen. The coal will be delivered with regularity between Sept. 1, 1900, and Aug. 31, 1901, as needed by the University for heating, lighting and power purposes. Bids for smaller amounts than the whole will be preferred so that at least two contracts may be made. Quality and price will be considered in awarding the contracts. A bond or other satisfactory guarnty will be required for the fulfillment of the contract, subject to conditions over which the contractor has no control. The right is reserved to reject any and all proposals. Proposals will be addressed to W. L. Pillsbury, Secretary, Urbana, 111.

Your Committee on July 17, the day set for opening bids, received proposals from seven parties for a full or partial supply of coal. After a consideration of the proposals the contract was awarded to the ftiverton Coal Co., of Chicago, for $1.20 per ton, to be delivered in Champaign, f. o. b. cars. Your Committee caused the following report to be sent to all parties who had sent in proposals for coal:
