T h e B o a r d of T r u s t e e s of t h e University of Illinois met at t h e P r e s i d e n t ' s H o u s e , U r b a n a , Illinois, at 10:00 a. in., M o n d a y , J u n e 9, 1902. T h e m e m b e r s p r e s e n t were Messrs. Bayliss, B u l l a r d , H a t c h , M c K a y , N i g h t i n g a l e , a n d S m i t h a n d M r s . Carriel, Mrs. A b b o t t , a n d M r s . A l e x a n d e r ; absent, G o v e r n o r Y a t e s and Messrs. C o n r a d and M c L e a n . P r e s i d e n t D r a p e r was p r e s e n t . T h e m i n u t e s of t h e m e e t i n g s of M a r c h 1 1 , 1902, A p r i l 2 4 , 1 9 0 2 , a n d M a y 20, 1902, were approved as p r e s e n t e d by t h e Secretary. T h e action of t h e E x e c u t i v e C o m m i t t e e t a k e n at its m e e t i n g s of A p r i l 24, 1902, A p r i l 26, 1902, a n d M a y 20, 1902, were confirmed.

lo the Board of Trustees: My most heartfelt acknowledgments are due to the Trustees for the action of the Board at a special meeting held April 24, in granting me leave of absence for a year without loss of salary. So generous a concession had not suggested itself to me and I should never have thought of asking it. For what it implied to the world, concerning the views of the governing board touching the success of my administration of the office of President of the University, I can never be sufficiently grateful. As my convalescence has been rapid, and as I have reason to hope for years of health and strength sufficient for work, I shall not need to avail myself of the full measure of your generosity, but I shall endeavor to reinforce my word of thanks by a yet better service to the University.
