CHAMPAIGN, I I I . , Sept. 21,1900. lo the Board of Trustees: 1. Pursuant to authority given at the June meeting of the board, I have made appointments of the following instructors and assistants for work in the University, and report the same for your information and approval: Mr. Fred Conrad Koch, Instructor in Chemistry, at $80.00 per month, for ten months. Mr. Ira Harris Derby, Instructor in Chemistry, at $75.00 per month, for ten months. Mr. Otokar Ludwig Prohaska, Assistant in Chemistry, at $50.00 per month, for ten months. Mr. William Maurice Dehn, Assistant in Chemistry, at $50.00 per month, for ten months. Mr. Albert Leroy Marsh, Assistant upon the State Water Survey, at $50.00 per month for 12 months. Mr. Nathan Austin Weston, Instructor in Economics, at $80.00 per month, for ten months. Mr. Hugh Joseph Graham, Assistant in Rhetoric, part time, at $40.00 per month, for ten months. Mr. Lewis Archibald Robinson, Assistant in Mathematics in the Preparatory School, at $40.00 per month, for ten months. Mr. Roy H. Slocum, Assistant in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, at $50.00 per month, for ten months. Mr. Arthur R. Johnston, Assist in Chemistry, part time, at $20.00 per month, for ten months. These appointees have all begun work. It is quite possible that two or three additional instructors or assistants may be required. If so, they will be arranged for as is practicable. No appointment of an instructor upon the violin has been made, because of the difficulties we have heretofore experienced in that department, and because of the scarcity of competent persons. T h e a p p o i n t m e n t s r e p o r t e d b y t h e p r e s i d e n t were approved at t h e salaries a n d for t h e t e r m s n a m e d . 2. At the desire of the school of music, I recommend that the following rule be adopted: "All students in music at the University shall be required to pay an additional tee of $1.50 each semester, which fee shall entitle such students to one ticket each for all concerts in the concert course of the Choral Society of the University, and students paying this fee shall pay no fee for work in the chorus." Harker for expenses and services as lecturer, and organizer and presiding judge of the moot courts in the College of Law for the last University year; and also the same sum for the coming year, to be paid at the end thereof. A n appropriation of $500.00 was m a d e to p a y J u d g e H a r k e r for services rendered last year. T h e oonsidaration of h i s further emp l o y m e n t to have charge of t h e moot courts of t h e College of L a w a n d of t h e e m p l o y m e n t of lecturers i n t h a t College was referred to t h e C o m m i t t e e on I n s t r u c t i o n for r e p o r t at t h e n e x t m e e t i n g of t h e Board.
