185 JUNE 7, 1876. The Board met as per adjournment. The Regent, Dr. Gregory,' submitted the following letter: To the Board of Trustees of the Illinois Industrial University: GENTLEMEN :—I regret to be obliged to ask to be excused from meeting you this morning to give you a final answer in regard to the withdrawal of my resignation now virtually before you. I cannot decide a question so momentous to myself and the University without further reflection. I will endeavor to give a definite answer at your evening meeting. In order that the Board may feel no embarrassment in its course, please consider this as a formal tender of my resignation, to take effect after the close of this day's duties. With expressions of profoundest respect, gentlemen, I remain Your obedient servant, J. M. GREGORY. Mr. Flagg offered amendments to By-Laws, which were referred to a committee of three with instructions to embody their substance in a report. The following resolution concerning secret societies was adopted : Sesolved, That the Board condemn the formation and perpetuation of secret societies in the University as detrimental to the scheme of self-government attempted by its students; and that we trust a due regard to the best interests of the institution will induce our students to disband and discountenance such organizations. The Treasurer read his report.
