Nathan Newmark Civil Engineering Building

By 1964, the Civil Engineering program at the University had "the largest full-time enrollment and award[ed] more degrees than any other civil engineering department in the country". In the 1963-1965 biennium, an appropriation to fund Phase I of a new Civil Engineering Building was approved [1] and construction on the $4.2M [2] Nathan Newmark Civil Engineering Building was to be completed by November of 1965. [3]

The building was to "provide facilities for the fields of soil mechanics, sanitary engineering, and reinforced concrete structures". [4] It honors Nathan Newmark, who began in 1930 as a graduate research assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering, before taking over as Department Head from 1956 to 1973. [5]
